Liberty cabbage

Another thing I didn't learn in history class. During the lead-up to World War I in the U.S., nationalism, and anti-German fever, ran very high. President Wilson played fast and loose with the constitution (deja vous?) and, this is true, sauerkraut was renamed liberty cabbage. We really haven't gotten very far, have we?

I learned this in a great book, The Great Influenza, which talks about much more than the influenza epidemic 1918-19. More about that later.

What? Cabbage causes influenza??? Gee, who knew? (Whee! Being purposely obtuse can be fun!)

I knew this from a 101-year-old man who remembered Liberty cabbage.

Now be very careful when you close the freedom doors behind you.

By the way, have you freedom kissed anyone lately? 'Tis spring!
